Dental Implant FAQ

Q.

Will I need to have bone grafting?

A.

On average, patients that have had a missing tooth for a month or more will require a bone graft prior to dental implant surgery. A consultation with Drs. McRay or Robbins, who specialize in implantology, will reveal the particulars of your specific case. We understand each patient is unique, and we tailor a treatment plan accordingly.

Q.

How long does it take to get a dental implant?

A.

The entire process of getting a dental implant can take up to 18 months, depending on the surgical site, your need for bone grafting, and the complexities of your case

Q.

How do dental implants work?

A.

Dental implants are made of titanium, so they are able to permanently bond with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This fusion is so effective that it allows dental implants to function like natural teeth in all chewing, biting, and dietary capacities.

Q.

How painful is it to get dental implants?

A.

During the surgery, you will be properly anesthetized at all times, so you won’t feel a thing. And after surgery, you’ll be relieved to know that most of our patients experience very little pain. We will help you manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications. We would be happy to discuss any necessary prescriptions during your visit.

Q.

What are dental implants made of?

A.

Dental implants are made of titanium. An implant is comprised of three parts: the implant itself (a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone), the abutment (a connector between the implant and crown), and the crown (the part that is visible and looks like a tooth). Drs. McRay and Robbins partner with renowned oral surgeons at implant centers in and around the Houston area who place the implant and the abutment before we skillfully complete the entire process with the final crown.

Q.

How long do dental implants last?

A.

Studies have shown that properly placed and well-cared-for dental implants can last for a long time. Our cutting edge technology and extensive experience enable us to give you the very best shot at keeping yours for life!
