Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Nearly everyone has felt some anxiety prior to visiting a doctor; however, if fear stops you from seeing a dentist entirely, sedation dentistry may be able to help. If you experience any of the following, our treatments can help minimize discomfort and improve your experience:

  • Previous traumatic dental experience
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • High anxiety level
  • Fear of needles or other dental tools
  • Discomfort with the sounds, tastes, and/or scents associated with dental treatment

Three of the most popular sedation dentistry methods are nitrous oxide, oral medication, and I.V. sedation. These techniques can effectively calm anxiety and enhance relaxation while keeping you conscious and in control.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide sedation is inhaled through the nose during treatment offering patients a relaxed, euphoric experience. Safely monitored by our dental team, we easily adjust the dosage throughout treatment. Nitrous oxide takes effect quickly and wears off right away allowing patients to return to their regular activities following treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a pill taken at a predetermined time prior to your visit allowing you to relax throughout treatment. While patients remain awake during care, they are calmer, more relaxed, and experience significantly reduced discomfort. Due to the long lasting effects of the sedatives, patients need a trusted friend or family member to drive them to and from our office.

Intravenous Sedation

Intravenous sedation uses sedatives administered intravenously combing the best of both other forms of sedation: the safe in-office administration of nitrous oxide and the increased sedative effects of oral conscious sedation. We are able to adjust the dosage of IV sedation during care, and the effects are long lasting. As with oral conscious sedation, patients will need a trusted friend or family member to drive them to and from our office.
